Now, let’s be honest… Learning a new language isn’t that easy. I get it! I’ve learned 6 languages myself (English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, Dutch and German), but I only speak 3 of them fluently together with French (my native language). It made me understand that fluency not only comes from clear and structured lessons that focus on language skills but also from practice. Don’t we say practice makes perfect… That’s exactly why I encourage my students to think, hear and speak the language. You have to live the language and use it. No vocabulary lists or purely grammatical explanations, but a focus on comprehension and speaking skills.

When I began teaching French, back in 2015, it was to groups of Brazilians living in Belgium. They wanted to make their way in French fast and as less theoretical as possible. It was a bit challenging for me but a good way to make lessons as practical as possible and to make the most of it. We then focused on language skills and real-world situations.

Later on, I also worked with teenagers struggling at school. It was eye-opening. Learning a language shouldn’t be overwhelming, daunting or hard. Explanations must be clear and simple, paired with practical examples. It was so rewarding to see their faces light up and hear them say, ‘Thank you, ma’am, I finally get it now.’

After that, I switched to adults and worked in a public institution in Brussels offering language trainings, in a non-profit organization with retired people and finally for private language schools. There was one thing in common: learning should be fun. If you have fun, you enjoy the learning process; and when you like something, you stay motivated and see results.
